By AditiBhatt

The 9th INDEPSO and ISPSM Annual Update on Peritoneal Malignancy is coming soon. A decade has passed since the first peritoneal malignancy meeting was held in India (Bangalore, 2015). This year's meeting will be held in the historic city of Kozhikode (Calicut), located on the Malabar Coast of Kerala in South India, home to the backwaters of the Arabian Sea. This year's theme is "Towards Multidisciplinary Care and Collaborative Research." Through lectures, debates, and case discussions, speakers will provide a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in the treatment of peritoneal malignancy in India and globally, with a focus on multidisciplinary care models.

Speakers from India, Europe, the USA, China, Malaysia, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka will participate, including some of the leading clinicians and researchers in the field.

Cytoreductive Surgery Video Workshop (June 4, 2025)

Prior to the conference, a video workshop on cytoreductive surgery will be conducted by Paul Sugarbaker. This comprehensive 8-hour course will include a series of lectures and video demonstrations on cytoreductive surgery techniques. The course goes beyond the knowledge of cytoreductive surgery techniques published in books and scientific journals. From exploring the peritoneal cavity, calculating the Peritoneal Cancer Index (PCI), to performing some of the most complex peritoneal resections, the course offers participants a unique opportunity to discuss the nuances of cytoreductive surgery with Paul Sugarbaker. He will be strongly supported by a panel of international experts. Many practically helpful topics for surgeons include the use of energy devices, major and minor visceral resections and reconstructions, tricks to avoid stomas, and the placement of intraperitoneal chemotherapy pumps.

Pathology Workshop (June 7, 2025)

This workshop will be chaired by Frederic Bibeau, head of RENEPATH, France. This workshop is for pathologists and surgeons and will cover the pathological basis of peritoneal malignancy, such as the diagnosis and classification of rare peritoneal tumors, assessment of pathological response to systemic therapy and its clinical significance, and the handling and reporting of cytoreductive surgery specimens. The workshop will include lectures, case discussions, and slide presentations showcasing diagnostic challenges.

Peri-operative Management Workshop (June 6, 2025)

An important aspect of the multidisciplinary management of peritoneal malignancy is the peri-operative management of patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). This workshop is for surgeons, anesthesiologists, and critical care specialists who wish to develop a peritoneal malignancy program, as well as those with limited experience in this area. The main focus of this workshop will be the current standards of peri-operative management, accelerated recovery after cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC, and the prevention and management of complications from both anesthetic and surgical perspectives. This workshop will be led by the critical care team at MVR Cancer Center, Kozhikode, and other experts from across India. Delegates will learn what is feasible, evidence-based, and effective in the Indian context.

Who should attend this meeting, and why?

All clinicians involved in the treatment and management of peritoneal malignancy should attend this meeting:

1. You will learn

a. The basics of peritoneal oncology

b. The latest advances in the field

c. Current standard treatments

d. Research dynamics and clinical trials

e. The latest developments in India

2. Opportunities to interact with domestic and international experts

3. Establish professional networks, collaborations, and participate in research activities

4. Gain inspiration and dedicate oneself to the field of peritoneal surface oncology

The peritoneal oncology community is looking forward to the results of two important trials, CAIRO-6 (peritoneal metastasis of colorectal cancer) and TRUST (advanced ovarian cancer), to be announced at the 2025 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting. Following the ASCO Annual Meeting, there will be some exciting presentations and engaging discussions.
